2009 PO GARY FARLEY MEMORIAL 5K

Perfect running weather made for a great day for the 16th PO Gary Farley Memorial 5K race on Sunday October 4, 2009. The excitement began with the children’s fun run at 0830, led by none other than Nassau Police Running Club’s (NPRC) John Conley. At 0900 the main event was kicked off by Kevin McQuillan.  Kevin, a friend of NPRC sang God Bless America under a gigantic American Flag, which was displayed above the start line by the Bellmore and Massapequa Fire Departments. The Wantagh and Seaford Police Auxiliary kept the roadways clear for the 380 runners/walkers who completed the 5K course (Over 450 entered the race this year).  The Department had a strong turnout and the law enforcement division had a combined number of male/female entries of 99 runners.  The event was well documented by department and anyone interested in photos can go to the Gallery link of the NPRC website at www.nprunclub.org.  If you are not a club member you can contact the website administrator for the password.  Law Enforcement awards winners included, in the open male division; Rocco Sinisi, Matthew Dunseith and Peter Lang, and in the open female division Lesli Hiller, Christine Fugarazzo and Anna Totorici. The results in the male masters law enforcement division were, (top down) Paul Rauseo, Wayne Giglio and TR Hughes and for the female masters law enforcement, (top down)  Linda Brymer, Sandra Espada and Anita Chen.  There were 96 award winners, for complete results you can go to our official race timers who did an outstanding job as usual (thanks Dennis) at www.flrrt.com. This year we had the pleasure of having Terry Bisogno announce runners as they crossed the finish line. Terry also helped us keep the award ceremony moving, back at the breakfast and awards ceremony at Mulchahy’s.  Terry’s special knowledge of LI runners and enthusiasm made for a great added bonus this year. The 7th Precinct as usual did an excellent job in keeping sponsorship interest and we had a great number of local sponsors support the race and the Department. This year, Winthrop University Hospital came through not only as a sponsor but they sent a team of staff to provide information, support and free blood pressure testing before and after the race.  We hope to continue this new relationship in to the future.  Commissioners Mulvey and McGuigan both completed the course in a race that ended a photo finish! NPRC and the race directors would like to thank the administration and the members of the Department for their continued support of this event. Finally, special thanks to the race committee members: Lt. Alan Hirsch, NPCR President, Detective John Conley, Police Officers Frank Borgi, Lori Levering, Mark Spottiswood, Debra Appice, Gary Fujarski and Janet Gallagher, AMT Shaun Wilbert and DCA Lesli Hiller for making it a successful event and a memorable day honoring PO Gary Farley.

Just a little bit about Gary Farley:

A caring and dedicated cop, Gary was an easygoing, friendly person with a real sense of humor. A graduate of MacArthur High School, Gary and his wife lived in Levittown with their son and daughter, He was a member of the 7th Precinct from January 1987 until his death In the line of duty on March 7, 1993. The tragedy of Gary's death was felt throughout the whole Department. In an effort to ensure that he would be remembered, members of the Nassau Police Running Club elected to sponsor an annual 5-K Memorial run In his name. The P.O. Gary Farley Memorial 5-K Run Is now In Its 15th proud year. Gary's name and sacrifice are known by thousands of people who may never have been aware of it had the run never been realized. We feel it Is a fitting tribute to the man as we knew him and thank you for participating.

GARY FARLEY RUN 2008

Saturday September 12, 2008, was the 15th Annual Gary Farley Run. Gary was a member of the 7th Precinct from January 1987 until his death in the line of duty on March 7, 1993. For the past fifteen years the Nassau Police Running Club has sponsored this Memorial run in his name. This year, President of the Nassau Police Running Club Alan Hirsch, rallied three hundred and forty runners and walkers who completed the 5-kilometer course in very humid and overcast conditions. NPRC could not have pulled it off without the volunteers who helped out before, during, and after the race. John Sharpe, Rick Hollman, and Sean Wilbert organized the race number and shirt pick command at Runner’s Edge on Friday. Anyone who was at the race could not miss the efforts and support of the Wantagh and Levittown Fire Departments, NCPD E.S.U., Photo Unit, Aviation, Mounted, E.A.B., H.P.B., and the Police Auxiliaries. The children’s fun run was a huge hit as usual with our Leader of the Pack, John Conley, coordinating and blazing the trail for the young runners. Yes that was John, still speedy even in costume. NPRC also needs to thank Deb Appice, Maureen Stewart, Tom Scott, Gary Fujarski, and Janet Gallagher for their hard work and dedication to making the race such a success and fun time for everyone!

As usual, the members of the department stepped up to the plate and the Law Enforcement Division had ninety-one participants. Commissioner Mulvey ran 8:20 miles finishing with a time of 25:53. Chief Turk and Inspector Jaskot had a photo finish in a time of 32:02. Rocco Sinisi put aside NYC Marathon training for the day and completed the course handily in 19:23 winning the Male Open Law Enforcement Division, with Kevin Healy and Kevin Clark coming in 2nd and 3rd place in that division. The Female Open Law Enforcement Division was won by Lesli Hiller with a time of 22:18, followed by Morgan Dirico in 2nd place and Helen Yzaguirre in 3rd place. NPRC Member Kevin McPadden also had a fast race finishing first in his division running in 21:09. Other stand outs were; three generations of O’Learys participated, Mike, his son Ryan and his grandson Jack Preston, who came home with a ribbon in the “fun run,” additional NPRC members Michael Yowhan, Frank Miller, Ray Cote, Bob Newbert, Jim Cereghino, and Jim Skopek and John Conley crossing the line within seconds of each other. A big effort was made by first time racers; the Academy’s Sean McCarthy, Legal Bureau members Israel Santiago, Jennifer Corrado and Tatum Fox, former ADA Michelle “Designer Runner” DiPaolo, and Honorary Club Member Ken Tobin, they will be back for more!

This year was the first time we were joined by our police recruits, we hope this is a trend that continues into the future. The celebration at Mulcahy’s was a huge hit thanks to the efforts of the NPRC and the many donations by generous sponsors. Gary’s mother joined the celebration, as she does every year, to cheer on her grandson Gary Farley, Jr. who also participated in the race.
